This modern sanctuary balances rugged isolation with upscale comfort, custom-built for birders, hikers, photographers, and astronomers. It delivers front-row seats to Chiricahua sky island birding and ultimate Bortle Class 1 stargazing. It is one of the finest Portal Arizona cabins and premier dark sky cabin rentals in AZ.

Peace & Privacy: An on-site homeowner lives in a completely separate structure, remaining entirely out of your way but available via text if you need anything at all. The private driveway offers ample parking space for multiple vehicles.

Other birds include: Blue Grosbeak, Hooded Oriole, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Northern Mockingbird, White-throated Swift, Gambel’s Quail, White-winged Dove, Elf Owl, Screech Owl, and nice family of recently fledged Verdins feeding on the oranges put out by the owner & more."

The story of Chiricahua Bird/Sky Cabin is a journey of embracing the wild, learning from the land, and building a dream from the ground up right here in the Chiricahuas.

Trading the City for the Unknown
We traded the city’s noise for the canyon’s silence, leaving the fast-paced world behind for a front-row seat to the cosmos.
Our journey began in a simple camper in remote Southeast Arizona. We had no Wi-Fi, no phone service, and hauled our own water. It was challenging, but deeply transformative. In that quiet, minimalist space, we learned to truly tune in to nature—tracking the sun across canyon walls and watching the night sky come alive with stars like we had never seen before.
We didn’t just move to the desert. We let it change us.
An Answer In The Canyon
We spent a couple of years cleaning and fixing other local rentals and it gave us a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the accommodations available to visitors and birdwatchers. We immediately saw the gaps in what was being offered—from cleanliness standards and hospitality, to comfort and convenience—and we wanted to fill them all.
The Universe Spoke
One morning, we heard a strange, puppy-like barking sound echoing through the trees. Mark stopped and asked, "What is that barking bird sound?" It was our very first encounter with the legendary Elegant Trogon—and our official welcome to the sky islands. That same magical day, we found the cabin, and we knew exactly how to bridge those gaps.

This cabin is worthy of the extraordinary land it sits on. After years of camper life, we knew exactly which simple luxuries we wanted to share with our guests in Portal: a modern three-level multi-head shower, an outdoor fireplace, a screened-in porch for bug-free lounging, wide French doors for year-round indoor/outdoor living, and sweeping wilderness views from every room.
It took three years of dedicated work to build the infrastructure, haul materials, and place the cabin just off Portal Road by the historic Mighty Oak landmark.
We are incredibly proud to welcome fellow travelers, birdwatchers, and stargazers. We invite you to experience the magic of the Chiricahua Sky Islands with all the comforts—from high-speed Starlink to purified reverse-osmosis drinking water—we once only dreamed of providing.

Our cabin sits in a biologically unique region. Here are our favorite local spots and activities to help you plan your journey:
Pristine Dark Sky Astronomy & Stargazing
Portal is a globally renowned haven for astronomers due to its complete absence of light pollution.
Zero Light Pollution: Our property boasts pristine, certified Bortle Class 1 Dark Skies—the absolute darkest ranking on Earth.
We have equipped our observation porch with dedicated red lights to help protect your night vision while enjoying the incredible dark skies of the Chiricahua Mountains.
Naked-Eye Clarity: Turn off all of the cabin lights, step onto the open deck, and enjoy a crystal-clear, razor-sharp view of the Milky Way, distant nebulae, and shooting stars without needing any special equipment.
Astrophotography Welcome: The deep, unfiltered darkness and steady mountain air provide the perfect, crisp environment for photographers. Be sure to pack your own tripod and wide-angle lens to capture the sky!
World-Class Bird Watching
The Chiricahuas are a vital migratory corridor for rare birds.
Add to your list of bird sightings without ever leaving the cabin. We have onsite feeders, nectar, suet, an owl box, a water fountain, and a wildflower garden. This is a peaceful oasis providing for birds of all kinds year round.
Cave Creek Canyon: Located right outside your door, this canyon is nicknamed the "Yosemite of Arizona." Walk along the creek to spot the magnificent, rare Elegant Trogon.
Southwestern Research Station (SWRS): Just 5 miles up the road, this active field station welcomes the public to view their bustling hummingbird feeders. Mark and I are proud team members here.
South Fork Area: A protected, peaceful day-use area down the road that is a legendary hotspot for unique local wildlife and owls.
Epic Hiking & Geologic Wonders
Chiricahua National Monument: A short drive away, featuring 17 miles of trails weaving through massive, gravity-defying rhyolite stone pinnacles.
Echo Canyon Loop: Located in the nearby National Monument, this 3.3-mile hike is our favorite. It takes you deep through narrow rock passages and right alongside towering stone giants.
National Forest Backyard: Step right off the back of our property directly into the Coronado National Forest for exclusive, crowd-free hiking.
Cave Creek Trail Access: Walk under 500 feet from the cabin to hop directly onto the easy, 1-mile Cave Creek Nature Trail (#603), or gear up for a challenging, 4.8-mile steep mountain trek up the popular Silver Peak Trail (#280) starting right near the canyon entrance.

Water: Pure Mountain Spring Water & Delivered Supply
We manage our water with deep care for our surrounding ecosystem. Because we choose not to drill a well—which can disrupt the fragile local water table—our water is intentionally and responsibly dual-sourced:
Pure Mountain Spring Drinking Water: We hand-fetch your premium Reverse Osmosis (RO) drinking and cooking water directly from the nearby South Western Research Station (SWRS), where Mark works and I volunteer. This hyper-local, community-shared spring water connects you directly to the life-blood of the Chiricahua Mountains.
Delivered Utility Water: Our water for showers, washing dishes, and general utility is delivered directly to our storage tanks. This allows us to keep a strict, transparent tab on our water footprint without taxing the local earth.
Is the cabin handicap friendly?
Yes, absolutely. Having personally lived through a severe mobility impairment, I chose and designed this cabin specifically to ensure true independence and ease of movement for travelers with mobility challenges.
Step-Free Entry: A gentle custom ramp leads directly from parking to the front door.
Single-Level Living: Zero interior steps or stairs anywhere inside.
Wide Clearance: Wide French doors and an open-concept layout for easy chair or walker turns.
Accessible Bathroom: Thoughtfully laid out with a step-free design.
Indoor/Outdoor Flow: Flush transitions to the screened porch so everyone can enjoy the fireplace and bird feeders together.
Connectivity: High-Speed Starlink Wi-Fi
After spending our early years out here completely disconnected without Wi-Fi or cell service, we knew that when we finally brought internet to the cabin, we wanted the absolute best. We are proud to be one of the only rentals in this remote area equipped with high-speed Starlink satellite internet. Whether you need to upload birding photos or stream a movie, you will have a rock-solid, fast connection.
Is there a dedicated concrete or gravel observation pad for astronomy equipment?
We do not have a formal, designated observation pad. However, our property offers multiple open, level clearings with unobstructed, dark-sky views that are perfect for setting up tripods and telescopes. We have equipped our observation porch with dedicated red lights to help protect your night vision while enjoying the incredible dark skies of the Chiricahua Mountains.
Cellular Service
Cellular service is highly spotty in the canyons. However, because we have Starlink Wi-Fi, you can easily enable "Wi-Fi Calling" on your smartphone before you arrive to make and receive crystal-clear calls and texts.
Is the cabin difficult to find?
Not at all! Unlike many remote mountain rentals, we are located right off Portal Road by the famous "Mighty Oak." Once you see that iconic landmark welcoming you into Portal, you are home.
Do I need a special vehicle?
Because we are right off the main road, standard vehicles can easily access the property in all weather. However, a high-clearance vehicle or 4WD is always recommended for maximum comfort when exploring the deeper dirt and gravel roads throughout the canyon.
Where is the nearest grocery store?
We are delightfully remote! While the local Portal Store is within walking distance for great meals and a few essentials, we highly recommend stocking up on major groceries and gas in Willcox or Douglas before heading up into the mountains.
